- Mambo Street drummer, timbalero and co-founder -

David Mercado

Born in San Francisco of Mexican heritage and raised in the Excelsior District is the charismatic David Mercado, percussionist, co-founder and proprietor of the legendary Mexicatessen, "Don Chuy's" on the corners of Naples and Excelsior. David got his first dose of the music bug at the age of thirteen when he started taking part in quinceñeras along with his cousins and checked out bands such as Los City Limits, Ana Daisy, Bahia Internacional, Unidad Siete, etc.

By the time he was seventeen he and his cousins decided to form a band of their own. However, the only instrument not taken by everyone else was the timbales so he bought a set and practiced everyday until he felt he could play them fairly well. The band was called ?Anaconda?, playing, cumbias, rancheras, ballads, salsa, Latin rock and Top 40. They started playing for dances, weddings, quinceñeras, etc. Along the way, the band picked up guitar player Rudy Ramirez and conga player Angel ?Cacho? Galindo. By the mid-70?s, it had become one of the the best local bands in the Bay Area opening up for some of the top recording acts in the different Latin music genres. In due time, the band broke up and everyone went their separate ways.

Throughout the 1980?s, David Mercado became, by his own admission, a "musical whore". That is, he went on to play percussion with as many bands as he could. This offered him the opportunity to work with different people and styles. While it was a rewarding experience, his business interests required more and more of his time until finally he ended up taking a hiatus from music altogether.,

But that musical bug can only lie dormant for so long and by January of 1998, he had contacted Cacho and Rudy and set the wheels in motion for what was to become Mambo Street !
